Subject: HERRON in Emmet twp
Text of Query: I have been researching my gggrandfather WESLEY CLARK HERRON and I am looking for his parents and/or siblings. Here is the information I have on Wesley: WESLEY CLARK HERRON b. (by his own accord on civil war union muster records) July 20, 1833 KNOX COUNTY, OHIO (by other records) m. September 6,1865, Tamaroa, Perry Co., IL, MALINDA ELIZABETH BURGE b. October 24,1843, Wayne County, IL.,d. July 9, 1897, Jefferson County, IL., they had six children. Wesley served in the 84th IL VOL INF from 1862-1865. I first find written record of him in the Federal Military Census of 1861 and 1862 of men 18 to 45 in Emmet Twp., McDonough County, IL. He, after marriage in southern Illinois, returned to Emmet Twp., where in April 1869 their second child was born and died being buried in the Sickle family cemetery in Emmet Twp., their third child, my ggrandfather, was born April 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois, therefore sometime between April 1869 and April 1870 they moved to Jefferson County. I have been unable to find Wesley in the 1850, 1860, or 1870 census.<< I HAVE RECENTLY FOUND WESLEY IN THE 1870 CENSUS IN MARION CO. LISTED UNDER THE NAME CLARK HERRON>> I first find him in the Federal census of 1880, in Rome Twp., Jefferson County, Illinois. He lists his father from VA, mother from ____ . Most of my information was gleaned from military pension records. After the government established the pension for Civil War veterans and their families, Wesley's widow tried hard to obtain a pension for herself and her children. The pension file is about a foot thick. I have all of Wesley's descendants to present, most of us have stayed in Illinois. Now for the kicker, which I can't connect. At the same time as Wesley's stay in Emmet Twp., there was an ALEXANDER G. HERRON living there, he was from Knox Co., OHIO, he (by written record) married, in Knox Co., Margaret SAPP also of Knox Co., June 9, 1836. Her family is well documented in the area of Knox Co. I find Alexander and Margaret in the 1840 and 1860 census of FAYETTE AND McDONOUGH COUNTIES, IL., but not in the 1850 census. Also their youngest child, a daughter, is buried in the Stickle family cemetery, not far from, Wesley's child. I have researched Alexander's children in hopes of a connection to Wesley, so far not connecting to them. Has anyone ever come accross the name WESLEY CLARK HERRON in their research? This is my brick wall. Thank you, David Herron in Peoria County, Illinois

Subject: COEN (or COWEN)
Text of Query: I am researching the family (descendants) of WILLIAM H. COEN (1822-1881) and Spouse-MARY J. THOMAS (born about 1836) both of whom lived in Lamoine Twp., Mcdonough County, Illinois. Both are apparently buried in Round Prairie Cemetery, which I have not been able to locate, i.e. in what county. They were my great-grandparents. My grandfather was their first-born son, GEORGE EDWARD COEN, born in 1871, probably in Illinois. He died in 1920 in Collyer, Kansas. He had eleven (11) siblings.
So far, my research has found that at least five of the twelve lived to maturity and married. Three of them remained in Illinois.
1. Edward COEN was born 31-Mar 1871, died 12 Dec 1920 in Collyer, Kansas. He married Sarah Elizabeth HACKNEY.
2 Adeline Temperance COEN was born 20 Oct 1852 in Reddington Twp., Jackson Co., Indiana, and died 19 Jan 1883 in Hancock Co., Illinois. She married David Millard MOORE 19 Mar 1874 in McDonough County, Illinois, son of Alexander "Elic" Bridgewater MOORE and Sarah DAVIS. He was born 18 Aug 1852 in Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois, and died 5 May 1927 in Shannon City, Union, Iowa.
3 Elizabeth Ann Lydia COEN was born 1854 in Indiana. She married Samuel MCDONALD 19 Mar 1885 in McDonough County, Illinois.
4 Frances Ortha COEN was born 1863 in Illinois. She married Thomas VALENTINE 15 Dec 1881 in McDonough County, Illinois.
5 Elizabeth Rosa COEN was born Jun 1867 in Plymouth, Hancock, Illinois, and died 12 Mar 1908 in Wakeeney, Trego County, Kansas. She married Charles H. BROWN.
Information I have on the remaining siblings is as follows:
6 William H. COEN was born 1856 in Indiana, and died Feb 1860 in Birmingham Twp., Schuyler County, Illinois.
7 Mary E. COEN was born Abt 1858 in Indiana, and died Abt 1865 in Illinois
8 Arthur COEN was born 1862
9 Charles E. COEN was born 1865
10 George Eddie COEN was born Mar 1870 in McDonough County, Illinois
11 Myrtle COEN was born 1873 in Plymouth, Hancock, Illinois, and died 1873 in Plymouth, Hancock, Illinois
12 Margretta COEN was born Abt 1876 in Illinois, and died Abt 1881 in Illinois
I would appreciate any information on these individuals and/or their descendents

Text of Query: Need Help determining the identity of the BAIRD who was or had a photography studio in Colchester, Illinois sometime between 1880 and 1930's. Also trying to determine the name of the local undertakers during the same time period. Any help of direction would be greatly appreciated.

Note from the webmaster:
The BAIRD name in Colchester, Illinois, was also associated with clay mining. In the 1890 Business directory in the Colchester Independent newspaper, the photography business was "Godfrey & Baird".

Colchester's undertakers included

(1) During the late 1800s, the Walty & Carson Hardware offered undertaking services in Colchester.

(2) Walter Farmer was an undertaker ca. 1908. His father Ed Farmer, owned a general store. Farmer's undertaking business was destroyed by fire in 1910.

(3) Frank Williams, Sr. operated a funeral home for about 30 years (early 1900s), which was sold at auction in 1934 and purchased by George Jones (Jones Mortuary). (Jones Mortuary does NOT have the records from the Williams home, though).

(4) In the early-to-mid 1900s, Frank Williams's son Frank Williams, Jr. operated a second William's funeral home across the street from his father's funeral home. The house Williams Jr. operated from in the 1920 & 1930s was built by James W. Stevens who opened the famous Stevens Hotel (now the Hilton) in Chicago.

(5) Jones Mortuary (who purchased William's Sr.'s building, etc) is still in operation (2004) by the Carson/Jones family.
