Phoebe and William lived in Macomb in the 1880s. I have not found their graves and think they died before 1890. Jacob Gauf, Phoebe's father died about the same time and lived in Bernadotte. He was married three times. Will be glad to share any info I have on these families.

Tricia Hayward   7 February 2000
Researching: CURTIS, FLINT
I'm looking for Israel Curtis IV and his wife Olive Flint. They are on the 1860 census index for Bethel Township, McDonough County, IL
    Israel Curtis b. 24 Nov 1808 Middleton, Essex, MA d. 1876 Illinois ? at age 67 married about 1835 Olive Flint b. aft 7 Sep 1813 MA, d. 1882 Illinois ? at
age 68, daughter of Addison and Sally (Upton) Flint. He was the son of Israel Curtis (1781-1826) and Phebe Fuller (1786-1859) of MA.
Israel and Olive were both school teachers and had settled in Bourbon County, KY abt 1834, before they went to Illinois. He wrote several letters to his relatives in Massachusetts which survived him. The earliest from Illinois is dated 26 Nov 1837 from Liberty (Jones Creek P. Office) Ill. and the next 30 April 1843 from Greenville, Bond Co. Ill.  Israel sounds a rather whiny, pious fellow always giving advice to his younger brothers. Much of the early letters are spent extolling the virtues of Illinois--cheapness of land, etc. and urging his brothers to come west. Most of what I know of his family is from his letters and the 1850 census, when he was in Hancock County teaching school and trying to make it as a farmer. But on 2 October 1854 he purchased 38.57 acres in McDonough Co. Township 4-N Range 3-W and his letter dated 12 Feb 1857 is headed Young P.[ost] Office. McDonough Co. Ill. He mentions, "Wm has been going to school to an Academy in Galesburg (A Yankee Town) 50 miles from home." [Is that in Illinois?]  He evidently made a trip home to MA hoping to borrow money to buy more land and complains that the property north of his farm, which he wanted to buy for $1,000 had sold for $1,600 and talks about going to Kansas with his neighbors. He taught school in the county in 1857, but it sounds as if he had TB, as well as daughter Mary, because he mentions "the phthisic." As far as I know, they never went to Kansas. Family records said they both died in Illinois.
    Children were:
Maria Louisa b. May 1836 d. bef 6 Sep 1850 [not on census]
Mary Eliza b. Feb 1838 Illinois (mentioned in letter)
William Buckner b. 30 Apr 1840 IL (mentioned in letter)
Edward Everet b. July 1842 (in letter) d. bef 12 Feb 1857 (letter)
John b. abt 1844 IL (census)
Addison b. abt 1846 IL (census)
Sarah b. abt 1848 IL (census)
Henry b. abt Aug 1850 IL (census)
Laura Jane b. Feb 1855 IL (mentioned in letter)

Researching: ROBINSON, FRISBIE, STONEKING , CREEL
I'm looking for anyone connected with the following families and I'm willing to share what info I have. Thanks for your help!
Lewis Robinson was born about 1837 in Virginia. He died on 29 Jul 1883 in Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois. He was buried on 30 Jul 1883 in Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois; OakWood Cemetery. According to a Robinson cousin both he and his wife are buried in the potters section of Oakwood Cemetery with no stone.
His Obituary in the The Macomb Journal: Thursday, August 2, 1883. Poverty---Death---The Poor-House
A pitiful case of sickness came to as can is the third ward of this city Sunday night last, in the death of a man named Lewis Robinson, who, with his wife and an adopted daughter, six years of age, have been living in circumstances of sorest need for some time. They came to Macomb something over a year ago from Schuyler County; Robinson was in poor health, and for sometime, we hear, canvassed as a book agent; finally his disease, consumption, advanced so far that he was unable longer to make a livelihood; the wife, having to wait upon her husband, could not earn any money, and cruel want was added to sickness. Through pride, we learn, they did not call on the Supervisor, and it was only about a week ago that the neighbors knew of their absolute hunger. During last week dysentery attacked the already consumptive man, and Sunday he died. He was burried Monday. Mrs. Robinson, while waiting on her husband, was also taken with dysentery and was very ill when her husband died. There being no relatives to take care of the woman, Supervisor Imes conveyed her to the county house, where she will be cared for until she recovers. The little girl was taken by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Creel, living east of town.
1880 Federal Census, Schuyler Co., Illinois: Brooklyn Township: Enumeration District 263, sheet 2: #17/18:

Lurana Frisbie was born about 1842 in Virginia. Obit in newpaper says she was born in Bethel township. She died on 21 Feb 1917 in Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois. She was buried on 23 Feb 1917 in Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois; OakWood Cemetery. She was also known as Lewrana.
Her Obituary in the Macomb Daily Journal; Thursday February 22, 1917. Robinson
Through information received of Sol Pestle of this city it was learned that Mrs. Robinson who died yesterday morning at the county farm was the widow of the late Lou Robinson, who is buried in Oakwood cemetery. Her maiden name was Frisbie and she was born in Bethel township. William and Elisha Frisbie were her brothers.
The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:45 o'clock at the Martin chapel; interment in Oakwood cemetery.
Lewis Robinson and Lurana Frisbie had the following children: Luella Esteline Stoneking (from all appearances Luella is the daughter of Thomas J. Stoneking who was the son of Gegore W. Stoneking and Sarah Driskill married on 15 Sep 1842 in McDonough Co., Illinois.)

Researching: KELLEY
Looking for any information on Harry W. Kelley, and Alice (Allie) Edwards Kelley who I believe lived in Bushnell until about 1948. Harry was a lineman for the power company, does this sound plausible? He was born in Iowa. Alice was born in Lee County. I know they had at least one son James William Kelley. They moved to Pomona Calif where Harry died in 1968 and Allie in 1969. Harry was a Mason, and Alice was probably a Catholic. She was a cousin, my grandfather's niece.

Researching: WILLIAMSON
I am looking for the death date and death location of both William Frank Williamson and his wife Rebecca Mooney Williamson who were married in Piatt
Co., Illinois on 12-24-1865. William was born in Pickaway Co., Ohio on 3-27-1840 and Rebecca was born in Madison Co., Ohio, date unknown. To this union one known child was born: Ann(a) Williamson. After Rebecca's death before 1878, William married Harriet "Hattie" Harville on May 28, 1878 in Piatt Co. To this union 4 girls were born and raised in McDonough Co. - Florence, Iva, Alma, and Bertha. Two of these girls lived to adulthood and married a John Williams and a Mr. Nelson. It's very possible that William Frank Williamson is not buried with his first wife, Rebecca, but with his second wife, Hattie Harville Williamson in
McDonough County somewhere. Does anyone know where their graves are?

Researching: DUNBAR, HOPPS
I am looking for information about the family of Noah W. Dunbar, who settled in Lee Township, Fulton County, IA, in about 1844. He married his wife, Sarah Hopps, in Ballston, Saratoga County, NY, on December 12, 1822. I suspect that Sarah's father was Francis Hopps, who was born in Ireland in about 1751 and died in Ballston, Saratoga County, NY, on October 26, 1827. The 1880 U.S. Census says Sarah's mother was born in Connecticut. Francis Hopps also may have had a son named John R. Hopps, who settled in McDonough County, IL, before 1860. If any one can help me identify the wife of Francis Hopps, I would be very grateful.

Dan Stevenson   23 April 2000

County, Illinois. In 1920 they were living at McDonough Co., IL with son Kenneth, age 8.
Clara Rothrock (1884-1969) married Ernest Nicholas (1880-1937) and lived at Prairie City, McDonough Co., IL.

Researching: BERNHARD, MILLER, WAGNER
My Great-Great Grandmother was Mary Ann Bernhard, (b- 14 Nov. 1828 Penn. d-18 Jul. 1909 Iowa) daughter of (Unknown first name) Bernhard, (b- abt. 1799 Penn., d- bef. Mar. 1834 Penn.) and Susan Miller (b- 02 Nov. 1801 Penn. d- 01 Mar. 1887 near Bushnell, McDonough Co., Ill.) They had one other known child, a son; William Bernhard (b- abt. 1823 Penn.).
Susan (Miller) Bernhard remarried 25 Nov. 1834 Penn to John Wagner (b- abt. 1798 Penn. d- 01 Oct. 1856 Ellisville, Fulton County, Ill) Both are buried at Ellisville Cemetery. They were the parents of 5 known children: Joshua L. Wagner (b- 05 Oct. 1836 Penn. d- 06 Apr. 1913, buried at Bushnell, McDonough Co., Ill);  Alexander Joseph Wagner (b- 11 Feb. 1839 Penn. d- 19 Jun. 1869, buried at Ellisville, Fulton Co., Ill);  Alfred H.     Although my main interest is in Susan Miller Bernhard Wagner, and her first marriage, I would be more than happy to share any information with the Wagner side.  I have a copy of Amandus B. Wagner's Estate from 1922, which lists all of his surviving relatives, and the distribution of his estate... unfortunately it does not list their addresses, nor does it list their relationship to him.

Some of their descendants migrated to McDonough County, Illinois and the surrounding area at various times - some via Iowa. This web site has 54 people and 23 surnames with McDonough County connections, primarily allied with the surname of "Davidson."     Clarence S. Detwiler married Francis E. Merrick on 09/11/1871 in McDonough County. Seeking information on either party.

Chuck Kimball   7 June 2000
Researching: KIMBALL
My ggrandfather Edwin Moore Kimball was b. 1842 in McComb, McDonough Co., IL according to his newspaper obit. His parents were Charles Kimball and
Nancy (Elizabeth?) Moore, but that is all I know about them except that Edwin was raised by foster parents (Abraham Powers) after his mother died. There is family tradition that says that Edwin had at least a sister, but no knowledge of her. Also, Abraham Powers was young enough that he probably did not start raising Edwin until Edwin was at least several years old, so Edwin's mother probably did not die until 1845-1850? If Charles did marry Elizabeth Moore, then they were married in Fulton Co., IL, but that may be a different Kimball/Moore marriage. Edwin was a Presbyterian for part of his early adult life.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Uriah KLINE (b. c1817 in PA) and wife Susanna RUBLE KLINE (b. c1828 in PA) married in 1848 and moved from Mifflin Co., PA to McDonough County,
Illinois (just south of Macomb) in 1866. Does anyone know where they are buried and what their vital dates are? They had a large family that lived in McDonough County.
